Our Literacy Program aims to promote reading for young people.   We collect
slightly used books from our members and donate them to schools and
students.  We also select books to read to very young children.  We strongly
believe that reading skills are so fundamental to living a productive life and that
this program makes a difference in our community.
Two
highly recommended reading lists for all purpose summer reading for
elementary age children are the Reading is Fundamental List by Reading is
Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) and the American Library Association Reading List.
Both of these lists can be found on one website -
to these lists includes good strategies for introducing these books to the
children. Both lists provide for flexibility for reading abilities.  An activity link is
also provided on the website.

Every year the National Federation of Republican Women publish the
Mamie
Eisenhower Library Project (MELP)
, a list of recommended and outstanding
books reflecting Republican philosophy and ideals.  The
2010 List features
books about our American history with the theme this year being, “ Our History
Is our Future”.  There is something on this list for Republicans including diverse
topics for all ages.  It can’t be stressed enough for ARW members to become
informed about our American historical roots through comprehensive reading.
By reading we can find out where we have been as a country and from there
plan our future to become better informed voters.  To read the list

Our
Caring for the American Soldier program has been a great success with
projects like the "Girl Scout Cookies" or our annual "Christmas Stocking" and
our "Fourth of July Beach Party" campaigns.
